Serendipitous Sunday

Traditional blog title explanation:

A) Matthew popped in the movie Serendipity ( a terrible movie) on Saturday night.

B) A sale at the grocery store led me to last evening's birthday celebration meal.

I tend to always buy green bell peppers, because they are cheaper.  But really, I prefer red bell peppers.  So, a sale at our lovely local Rainbow Foods, led me to Sunday night's menu: Chili and Cornbread.

I know, I know, it's a repeat from my very first blog.  I did add a little turkey to the chili, and a little honey to the cornbread batter.  But, never fear.  I still have a recipe for you, oh blog-reading faithful.

Matthew and I spent our Sunday afternoon singing in a lovely concert at our church.  On Friday, in rehearsal, our fabulous music director, Scott, asked for volunteers to bring bars to said concert.  Before I knew it, my hand was in the air, jumping at such a blog-worthy chance.

I decided not to venture outside my comfort zone, and went straight-up Norwegian, Lutheran with my bars.

Grandma Houglum's "other" bars, The Ones with the Marshmallow Creme

1 package brownie mix (you could make from scratch, but why?)
1 jar marshmallow creme
3 cups Rice Krispies
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup peanut butter

I baked the brownies according to the package instructions.  Luckily, this recipe requires you to spread on the marshmallow creme while the brownies are still hot.  Remember my premature frosting tendencies?  I spread on the marshmallow creme and set the pan aside.  In a double boiler I melted the chocolate chips, and then the peanut butter.  I stirred in the rice krispies and patted the mixture on top of the brownie gooey goodness.

I give you the Lutheran bar, at its best.

And lest I forget to tell you, the red velvet cake?  It was good.  Geneva said "I just told you red velvet cake, because I felt like giving you a challenge".  Well Geneva, I feel I stepped up to the challenge quite well.  So friends, bring on the challenges, you might get a cake out of the deal!
